Pokhara Heart Camp

December 6th 2015

The team (Jayanti Memorial Trust, University of Colorado and Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Center) finished off with the Chitwan Camp on 5th December, 2015 and travelled later in the evening to Pokhara for its second camp. The camp was conducted at Western Regional Hospital (WRH) from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Our local partner for this camp was Heralo OPrathisthan, Pokhara.

Jayanti Memorial Trust conducts its Heart Camp at Pokhara every year but it had a different charm this year as we were Funded by the grant provided by Edwards Laborataries, USA. The expert team of doctors from USA, taught us to digitally record patients in the IPAD donated to us. Although an intricate affair but it is very practical in maintaining data of patients for referral in the future camps as well. Two hundred and ninety one patients were screened and availed expert advice, ECHO and ECG. Interns from Manipal University were placed with each doctor and hopefully received ample practical knowledge from the senior experts. The other reason for pairing each junior with medical officer from Manipal University with the senior expatriates was to ease communication between patients and doctors.

Amidst the crowd we were overjoyed to meet Ms. Urmila Lama and Mr. Santosh B.K. whom we had picked up from our previous camp in a serious condition and had them treated. It was the same group of doctors from the University of Colorado that checked them previously and advised immediate surgery. Seeing both the patients well and having recovered and rehabilitated well into their normal life gave us immense satisfaction. Humble incidents such as these make us realize the value of our hard work and dedication.

Due to the blockade and constraint in the mobility we did not recieve the strength of patients we are prone to witnessing in our free cardiac camps. However, atleast we could screen 291 hearts. Although a humble number yet served. The referred patients will be followed up by our liaison officerat Manmohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Center (MCVTC).

We cannot thank enough Lomus Pharmaceutical for supporting us with the free drug distribution and Pashupati Biscuits and Western Regional Hospital for their contribution towards the camp.
