Nepalgunj, Banke CME and Baganah, Bardiya Heart Camp

December 14th 2012

2012 has been full of activities for the Trust. Jayanti Memorial Trust bid farwell to this bursting year with a Continuing medical Education at Nepalgunj, Banke and a Heart Camp in Baganah, Bardiya. Both these events were well received. On one hand 85 doctors in practice, from Nepalgunj and medical officers from Lord Buddha Medical College, Nepalgunj had found the CME informative, on the other hand the Trust with the support and collaboration of the Medical Team of cardiologist from Gangalal were able to provide free medical checkup of more than 1500 genuine less fortunate people from the village of Baganah and its neighbouring villages. This first time experience of the Trust in another region besides Pokhara was a satisfying trip. Large number for people, some on bare foot, some meagerly clothed rushed to get their names registerd for free check up by experienced doctors from Gangalal National Heart Centre, Kathmandu and Nepalgunj.

The registration which started from 7 am in the morning and was to closed at 11 am was further extended till 1 pm in the afternoon bearing in mind the mass coming in. Almost all the people who came to this camp were from low economic background, who could not afford to travel to the capital for treatment or check up. We witnesses many parents coming to the free heart camp to get their children checked and to our surprise 75 percent of those children were suffering from some form of heart disease. The parents of these ill children were informed about the governemt’s policy of free treatment for children under the age of 15 years at State run Hospital and the Trust committed to bear the travelling cost of these children to Gangalal Hospital in Kathmandu and the cost of blood cross matching of these children prior to the surgery. JMT also committed to provided any other logistic support that these patients might need. There were few women who wer diagnoised with heart diseases and some who were previously diagnosied with some form of cardiac illness at Gangalal National Heart Centre but had not gone back to follow up when they were required to due to their low economic condition. Hence the Trust volunteered to bring such genuine cases to Kathmandu for follow up or treatment. One of the doctors from Gangalal, Dr. Rajib Rajbhandari when inquired about the number of people that were diagnosed with heart disease said that if we are to consider hypertension as a form of cardiac illness then around 80 percent from the 1500 plus people who came in for check up were diagnosed with hypertension.

Lomus Pharmaceutical extended their support to the camp by distributing diabetic and cardiac drugs to the patient at the camp. Sankalp another charitable organization distributed fruits and biscuits to the people who came to the camp and had to wait for their turn to get checked by the doctors.

The Trust sincerely thanks Mrs. Pratibha Rana under whose initiative, the Trust, Gangalal and Lomus Pharmaceutical joined hands in serving the less fortunate people of Bardiya. We hope and shall try to be back to this region next year. The camp could not have been successful with the techinal support by Dr. Rabi Malla, Dr. Raamesh Koirala, Dr. Urmila Shakya, Dr. Arun Maskey, Dr. Rajiv Rajbhandari , Dr. Minal Shrestha and other upcoming doctors who assisted theses prominent senior cardiologists in the camp.

All’s Well that Ends Well ! The Trust couldn’t have asked for a better way than a heart camp with an overwhelming participation by people, to end a filled and satisfying year.
