Cardiac Camp at Kailali

December 28th 2013

The Far Western Region of Nepal is rich in natural beauty and natural resources. However, socio-economic status of the people and the overall quality development of the region are very low. Although the region has the maximum presence of Non Governmental Organization and International Nongovernmental Organizations’ , the migrating trend of young people to neighboring country in search of job still continues in abundance. Yet the far westerners of our country lack proper shelter, food education and basic medical facilities. Due to the poor socio –economic status of these ill people, the huge distance between the capital and this region and the lack of proper medical facilities and information, these people have no clue what to do and where to go.

Rural Women’s Development & Unity Center (RWDUC), a nongovernmental organization with its head office in Kathmandu is actively involved in various projects concerning women’s issues identified a large number of cardiac patients in this region, who needed immediate check up. Upon request by RWDUC to Jayanti Memorial Trust (JMT) and with their support, both organization came together to conduct a free cardiac camp for these people under the expertise led by Dr, Bhagawan Koirala and his colleagues from Manamohan Cardiothoracic Vascular and Transplant Center (TUTH). Attariya, Kailali (a small town) and junction to head towards Dhangadi (headquarters of Kailali District), Kanchanpur District, Bardiya District and to the hills of Kanchanpur and Kailali District, was chosen as an apt location for people from the hills as well as from the Terai belt of the Far Western Region to benefit from this camp. The registration for the identified cardiac patients either on medication or had undergone surgery began a week prior to the 28th of December, 2013 (the day of the camp). While for those who wanted to rule out the possibilities of suffering from any form of cardiac illness due to felt discomfort were pre screened a week before the camp by doctors from Sewa Nursing Home, Attariya (venue of the camp). The patients identified as possible cardiac patients from the pre screening too were registered for precise diagnosis by cardiac experts at the camp.

In total 569 patients from Darchula, Accham, Baitadi, Doti, Dadeldhura, Bhajang and from the Terai belt of Far Western Region benefitted from the cardiac Camp. The MCVTC allocated operation and PTMC dates to 49 people who required immediate surgery at the camp and provided them with information on the documents they would have to bring along when they came for surgery to avail government’s aid for treatment. This not only saved the time of indigent cardiac patients but they now can avoid the unnecessary expenses commuting to and fro from Kathmandu to their hometowns, first for check up and scheduling operation dates, returning home and again going back to Kathmandu for surgery. 90% of the patients that came to the camp belonged to marginalized groups. Yet again Lomus Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. not only supported the cardiac camp with monetary sponsorship but also distributed cardiac drugs to the patients for a month. JMT and RWDUC are jointly in the process of getting identified needy patients to MCVTC for treatment.
